Well, no sooner did I decide to launch my very own blog when I also decided I needed to tackle the insane task of accomplishing a 50,000 word novel in 30 days via the National Novel Writing Month. My husband, comedy writer “Sideshow” Doug Allen, decided he was going to work through a story idea using this tactic and I thought I would join him. Although I studied screenwriting in college, and used to write creative fiction all the time in my (earlier) youth, it had been a long while since I had visited the Land of Make Believe.
And then I looked at my November schedule. What was I thinking?! The first week in November was the Wish Upon A Wedding Gala, followed by three days of The Party Goddess Uncensored, and then a visit from my mom, out tickets to The Pasadena Playhouse, and the annual Holiday in Magnolia Park that we’ve come to enjoy as Burbankians. I didn’t have much time to write. At the start of the Thanksgiving weekend, I had a little over eight thousand words toward the fifty thousand goal. And thus, the marathon began. At 6:53 a.m. after a butt-numbing ten hour sprint, I crossed the finish line!
And yet the novel isn’t done. I have scenes I skipped over to get to the stuff that my brain wanted to focus on. I have a whole section I skipped and the ending is…abrupt. But its an accomplishment. And I’ll be damned if I’m not tempted to get back into it, a mere nine hours after collapsing in my bed, grateful for the sleep mask I keep at my bed so I could cover my eye and pretend the sun and the world wasn’t really waking up yet.
So now that those decks have been cleared, I’m excited to launch into this blog! This is where I get to share whatever happens to be floating my boat: wedding tips or trends, special events industry news, cocktail recipes, maybe a review of a play I enjoyed (or didn’t), maybe news of shows I’d think you’ll enjoy; I’ll brag about my friends, I’ll toast to success, and I may even moan about the doldrums. We’ll see where the road takes us..!
And now, back to your regularly scheduled program…!
